Radiography passes penetrating radiation through a component to produce an image of what lies inside it, and leaves a permanent record that can be reviewed long after the inspection.

How it works

X-ray or gamma radiation is directed through the part onto film or a digital detector on the far side. How much radiation gets through depends on the thickness and density in its path, so a void, an inclusion or a change in section shows as a change in density on the resulting image. Image quality indicators are placed alongside the work and read on the finished radiograph, so the sensitivity actually achieved is demonstrated rather than assumed.

What it detects

Volumetric discontinuities are its strength: porosity, slag inclusions, shrinkage and lack of penetration in welds, and voids in castings. Cracks are found where they lie favourably to the beam. The method also verifies internal features and assembly, which no other method does as directly.

Typical applications

Weld examination in pressure and structural fabrication, casting inspection, composite structures, and internal assembly and foreign object checks where the component cannot be taken apart.
